SUBCLASS 189 DOCUMENTATION CHECKLISTOnce you receive an invitation, you'll need to provide comprehensive documentation to support your visa application. This guide covers all required and recommended documents.
Essential Documents Checklist
1. Identity Documents
Current passport (biographical pages) for you and all family members. Must be valid for at least 6 months.
Original or certified copy showing both parents' names.
If applicable in your country (both sides).
If applicable - original or certified copy.
If your name has changed (marriage, deed poll, etc.).
2. Skills Assessment
- Positive Skills Assessment from the relevant assessing authority
- Must be valid at time of invitation
- Must match your nominated occupation
3. English Language Evidence
- Test Results: IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, OET, or Cambridge
- Must show all four components (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking)
- Results must be less than 3 years old at time of invitation
- Must meet minimum Competent English requirement
4. Educational Qualifications
All degrees, diplomas, trade certificates you're claiming points for.
Complete transcripts showing subjects and grades for each qualification.
If applicable - VETASSESS or other educational assessment comparing your qualifications to Australian standards.
5. Work Experience Evidence
For EACH employment period you're claiming points for:
- Employment Contracts or offer letters
- Payslips (first, last, and representative samples)
- Tax Returns or tax assessment notices
- Bank Statements showing salary deposits
- Reference Letters on company letterhead including:
- Your job title and duties
- Employment dates
- Hours worked per week
- Salary details
- Contact details of referee
- Organizational Chart (if available)
- Job Descriptions
6. Police Clearance Certificates
- From every country you've lived in for 12+ months in the last 10 years
- Must be issued within 12 months of your visa application
- Include translation if not in English
- Australian Federal Police (AFP) check if you've lived in Australia
7. Health Examinations
- Medical Examination (Form 26) - By approved panel physician only
- Chest X-ray (Form 160) - For applicants 11 years and older
- HIV Test - For applicants 15 years and older
- Additional tests if required based on medical history
Important: You'll receive instructions through ImmiAccount after lodging your application. Do NOT arrange health examinations before being instructed.
8. Partner Skills Evidence (if claiming points)
If claiming partner points, provide:
- Partner's Skills Assessment - Positive assessment in occupation on same list
- Partner's English Test Results - Competent English minimum
- Partner's Age Evidence - Must be under 45
- Relationship Evidence - Marriage certificate or de facto relationship proof
9. Australian Study Evidence (if claiming points)
- Degree/Diploma certificates
- Academic transcripts
- Completion letters from institution
- CRICOS confirmation of enrollment
- Evidence of physical attendance (not distance/online)
10. Additional Points Evidence
Professional Year:
- Certificate of Completion from approved provider
- Must show completion date within last 4 years
NAATI Accreditation:
- NAATI credential certificate
- Must be at required level (paraprofessional or above)
STEM Qualification:
- Master's/PhD certificate from Australian institution
- Transcripts showing STEM subjects
- CRICOS confirmation showing eligible field
Regional Study:
- Proof of campus location in regional area
- Evidence of residence in regional area during studies

Certified Copies
Most documents must be certified copies. Acceptable certifiers include:
- Justice of the Peace
- Notary Public
- Lawyer or solicitor
- Registered migration agent
- Australian diplomatic or consular officer
Translations
All non-English documents must include:
- Original document (or certified copy)
- English translation by NAATI-certified translator
- Translator's certification and credentials
Digital Submissions
- File Format: PDF preferred (JPEG for photos)
- File Size: Under 5MB per document
- Quality: Clear, readable, color scans
- File Names: Use descriptive names (e.g., "passport-main-applicant.pdf")
